English now! is based on communicative language teaching and the lexical approach. In the lexical approach, instruction focuses on fixed expressions that often occur in dialogues, which make up a larger part of the discourse than unique sentences.
Meaning is conveyed primarily through vocabulary, so it makes sense to focus on vocabulary first and foremost, with grammar elements having their place within the topics, but more in the background.
After focusing on vocabulary, relevant grammatical points that arise in a particular context are identified. For example, when learning to talk about families at A1 level, students must first become familiar with the words for family members, but they must also master the use of possessive pronouns in order to be able to say something meaningful.
Each topic provides a selection of activities that demonstrate and practice grammar points in the relevant context. Furthermore, the learning tool offers an additional grammar lesson for each level, which allows for reference to extensive theory presented in a straightforward manner.
We have placed great emphasis on a variety of youth and adult-oriented content, as well as tasks that test listening and reading comprehension skills, while making the experience simple and entertaining. Of course, the content varies depending on the level of language proficiency:
A1 : Students learn interesting, culturally oriented facts about the UK and British people. Basic topics such as family, time, food, leisure activities, work and holidays are emphasized at A1 level.
A2 : Topics such as physical appearance, clothing, weather, places, illnesses and accidents, sports and leisure are emphasized in the A2 module. The main focus is on the United States.
B1 : At this level, students can talk about simple real-life situations. This is a good starting point for learning more advanced vocabulary. The module covers interpersonal topics such as hopes and dreams, differences and similarities, apologies and travel.
B2 : This level fully covers the material at B2 level and is dedicated to more advanced English language learners. The module covers various topics such as strengths and weaknesses, regrets and consequences, narratives and stories, instructional manuals, data collection and presentation.
The modules have three types of chapters:
Learn & Practice: Here the theme of the module is introduced. There is a focus on communication, vocabulary and using the language actively. Grammar is included where it belongs. For example, possessives (my, your, etc.) are worked on at A1 after family words are introduced.
Revise & Practice contains repetition and more exploratory tasks.
Survival English has authentic or near-authentic content. These chapters can be worked on independently of the gradual progression in difficulty we have planned for each level.
There are also three additional types of lessons that appear after completing every third part of the course:
Recap : integrated radio play for repetition,
Test : to determine knowledge level and specific preparation towards TELC tests,
Magazine : inspiring and provides a unique insight into cultural aspects.
English Now! also has a built-in recording app to record and listen to your own voice and check your pronunciation.
