– We get more time to guide

Trara School in Fredrikstad invested in teaching materials from Kunnskap.no . This has given teachers more time.

A year ago, the elementary school in Fredrikstad started using Fagpakke 1-7 from Kunnskap.no . The result has been that teachers can now use large parts of their teaching to follow up on their students.

– We want to shift the focus from operations to learning. Not just on school operations, absences and student affairs, says teacher and education inspector Per-Arne Wilhelmsen.

He started at the school about two years ago, and was at the forefront of getting the school to purchase teaching materials from Kunnskap.no .

90 percent of the hour for guidance

Students have access to a computer room or laptop. It is best to visit the computer room, where the PCs are ready. Students control much of their own learning.

– I'm keen not to talk too much. I show them the goals, then I walk around. After we started using teaching materials from Kunnskap.no , we see that up to 90 percent of the lessons are spent on guidance, says Wilhelmsen.

Mathematics by topic

According to Wilhelmsen, one of the positive things about the teaching materials is that it is easy to find the right topic.

– The BrettMatte teaching tool reaches students at different levels. You get both sound and images and the concrete exercises are very good. When you go into a topic, the students clearly see what they are going to learn.

He refers to exercises in fractions, for example. When the student clicks into the chapter, it is clearly stated what they are going to learn and the students are referred to subtopics. He thinks the topics in BrettMatte are numerous and relevant.

– Here you have a lot of material about measurement, and you will find information about the four types of arithmetic.

- Students get quick feedback on whether they did something right or wrong. We shift the focus a bit away from blackboard teaching and spend more time guiding.

Homework

He often picks out tasks from the teaching materials and gives the students homework.

– We see that many parents up to 6th-7th grade are unable to help their children. But in BrettMatte they get access to videos that explain. They get access to both images and text.

In addition to BrettMatte, which is suitable for students in grades 6-7, as well as for those who are good in grade 5, Trara School uses "I Can Count" for students who need to work a little extra on math.

– BrettMatte is a very good teaching tool in mathematics. I hope there will be even more tasks in the future, says Wilhelmsen.

Principal happy

The principal at Trara School has received more feedback from teachers after they began implementing the teaching materials from Kunnskap.no .

– I have received feedback in plenary, but also directly from teachers who have come to me. What remains the same is that this is a good tool. Teachers have access to good resources and teaching materials that make it easier than before to adapt teaching, points out Morten Johnsen, principal at Trara School.

He points out, among other things, that they have occasionally had to merge three small classes into two.

– Then there are teachers who have given feedback that Kunnskap.no has been a good tool for reaching students in the class.

Task bank

Several teachers consistently use Kunnskap.no to stitch together assignments for their students, and teachers now have access to a large bank of assignments.

It was initially Per Arne Wilhelmsen who was keen for the school to use Kunnskap.no .

– I understand very well why. The teachers are satisfied and they have had more time for guidance, says Principal Johnsen.
