Homeschooling in Norwegian B1 and B2. What works?

A DIFFERENT WORKDAY: How to give participants an active relationship with the learning material in purely online teaching?
Fully digital learning materials in combination with online meetings
The tips below are written by Marie Aalen, author of NorskPluss B1 and Norskpluss B2. She works as a teacher at Oslo adult education Rosenhof, and has used the teaching materials in combination with the video conferencing system Teams. If you are not familiar with them, you can browse through a chapter from NorskPluss B1 here:
What can students do on their own in the learning materials?
- Read and listen to the text
- Listen without reading the text.
- Read the text with word explanations.
- Listen to the text while they read.
- Listen to the text, use the pause button and repeat without reading.
- Take note of new words and expressions, and feel free to translate them into your native language.
- Learn the new words and expressions.
- Listen to the text one more time.
- Retell the content of the text orally.
- Do interactive exercises in vocabulary and grammar – everyone has the answer
- Do listening exercises – check against the text printout on the pages after the listening exercises in the online resource

5 ways to use the learning materials in online meetings - two hours per day
- Read pages of text aloud together and talk about them
We can have the students read two sentences out loud each in turn. That way we know everyone is participating.
Explain words, ask questions and answer questions from students. Supplement with images from the internet, and elaborate as needed. - Work with questions for the text or questions for discussion in groups/pairs
The groups can consist of 2-4 students. They can work for 15-20 minutes, for example.
- Work on specific grammar exercises with explanations
We can go to a specific task page and have students do a task in turn. Ask them why a certain answer is correct or not.
- Participants write their own examples in the chat
It is important to use the language actively to produce sentences and to check whether they are correct.
- Start every other day with grammar and every other day with text, so that the main focus is on one thing each day
Performance reports
Use the results reports actively!
We can see if and when the participants have been logged in by clicking on Teaching materials on the left in the menu when we log in as a teacher. It is also possible to see what the participants have done and how they have solved the tasks.
